Leap Year Madness

Hey there Madisonians.  According to Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania’s favorite groundhog and the most famous Shadow Analyst in the country, we will be having six more weeks of winter (three more to go!).  It has been a relatively mild winter so far, but it’s hard to argue with Phil’s wisdom.

We’re also gearing up for the big leap day on February 29th.  Interestingly, there will also be a leap second this year that will take place on June 30th.  A leap second?  What is that (you might be wondering)?  A leap second, much like a leap day, is used to keep the coordinated universal time in sync with mean solar time. In layman’s terms, leap seconds are used when the just the leap day doesn’t quite cut it. The clock is going to strike midnight two seconds in a row on June 30th this year.  Awesome, right?  For more information, visit the “Leap Second” page on Wikipedia.

Anyway, this extra day (and second) is a great opportunity to make up for lost time.  Here is a list of things we recommend to do with the extra day:

  • Chew an entire pack of Extra gum
  • Enjoy an extravagant dinner
  • Apply to be an extra in a movie
  • Extradite a package to someone special
  • Play leapfrog with your friends
  • And finally, utilize our free classifieds to post any EXTRA things you might have lying around that might be interfering with your leap day festivities.

So from all of us here at BuySellMadison, enjoy your leap year.  But please, enjoy it responsibly.  Always look before you leap year.

Madison’s Least Favorite Holiday

As the students at our Madison area universities can attest to, college is an incredible time.  It’s a time to try new things, meet new people, and learn about both your school work and yourself.  But college isn’t all fun and games.  There is one time of the year that every student dreads—one time when the fun ends and the real work begins.  Is it studying for finals?  Is it the clean up after that big party?  No, Madison, it’s Move Out Day!

On August 14th, most of the leases on the apartments and houses near the UW campus will expire, and thousands of students will be packing their bags and hitting the streets.  All the packing, cleaning, heavy lifting, lack of parking, and August heat combine to make one miserable day.  Many graduates will be leaving town, but for those with more school, the fun doesn’t end there.  Once move out ends, the Night of the Homeless begins.  Property managers rush to assess their units before new residents move in on the 15th, leaving everyone else on the streets in the mean time.  Students have all day and night with all their possession and nowhere to put them.  Many camp out in their tightly packed cars, and those who can afford it might opt to get hotel rooms.

I am pleased to tell you that there is another option on move out night!  Bethel Lutheran Church is offering to help students stuck in between leases with an event properly titled Bridge the Gap.  It runs from August 14th at 8:00 p.m. to the 15th at 7 a.m. at 312 Wisconsin Ave.  Parking will be available, the lot will be monitored, pizza and games will be provided, and there will even be breakfast in the morning.  Sounds like everything a student could wish for!  Students of all religious beliefs are welcome, and the only thing needed is a student ID.  If you have questions or would like to volunteer or donate, please contact Pastor Sarah at sarah@bethel-madison.org or call (608) 257-3577 x332.

As you can imagine, there are a lot of items that get tossed on the curbside on the 14th, most of it destined for the dump.  The United Way, St. Vincent de Paul, the City of Madison, the University, and the Dumpster Diving Revolution are all teaming up to help make sure any quality, reusable items make their way into good hands.  Clean clothes, furniture, nonperishable food, and household items can be donated at three sites in the campus-area neighborhoods on the 12th, 13th, and 14th.  For information on locations and collection times, please click here.

As for nonstudent Madison residents, I would like to suggest you avoid driving into the campus on Move Out Day!  With all the traffic and chaos, it might be a good idea to avoid biking as well.  But if you can get to campus by foot, it is quite a sight to see all the students, packed cars, and overall commotion.  And if you run into a student who just walked down several flights of stairs carrying bags that weigh more than they do, don’t be afraid to lend a helping hand.

Toughen up Mudder! The most talked about Madison Event this summer

A-ten-hut! You may have heard some of the hype surrounding the biggest, baddest event to hit Madison this summer: Tough Mudder. This ain’t your typical endurance test! And if you are envisioning a pleasant afternoon slipping and sliding through the mud, you are sorely mistaken! For starters, Tough Mudder is not a race; it’s a challenge. Sure, you can try to finish as quickly and smoothly as possible, but it’s so demanding that the real goal is simply to cross the finish line.

The event is a 10-12 mile military style obstacle course designed by British Special Forces, featuring everything from monkey bars, to rope walls, to electric shock treatment. The goal was to create an event to test “all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.” For a better idea of what Tough Mudder entails, check out some of the videos found here. Without a doubt, my favorite part of the competition is that participants are encouraged to enter in teams and help each other get through the course. No man left behind! I can’t imagine anything that could bring family, friends, and neighbors closer than working together to complete a challenge as difficult, intense, and fun as Tough Mudder.

The Madison Tough Mudder will be held at Devil’s Head this weekend, Saturday July 23rd and Sunday the 24th. The earlier you register, the cheaper the price, but there are still spots open on Sunday for those who absolutely must join! Anyone who wants to check out the action can pick up spectator tickets for $15 (children 10 and under get in free). Just make sure you register on the Tough Mudder website. On both days, the first wave begins tackling the course at 9 a.m. and the final wave should be stumbling across the finish line at around 4 p.m. Spectators get to enjoy all the post-event festivities including awards for best costume, best mohawk, and best mullet, as well as three live bands!

So make sure to stop by Devil’s Head this weekend and check out this incredible and unique event. Whether you go for the entertainment or to see if you have what it takes, a visit will be well worth your time. Tough Mudder will be back in Madison next year on October 13th and 14th, so start organizing your team and sign up early! Stay cool Madison.

Why you'll love the Dane County Farmers' Market

Good day Madisonians! Gilbert the Green Guy here with a blog update from BuySellMadison.com. I hope you’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather as much as I have! All this sunshine has got me ready to come out of hibernation and hit the streets of Madison. Look for me out and about at local events in the upcoming weeks, and maybe even starring in a video or two.

One event that’s been a personal favorite of mine has been the Dane County Farmers’ Market. This Madison tradition is the largest producer-only farmer’s market in the country, with around 150 vendors every week! Not only will you find all sorts of delicious products, but you can take comfort in the fact that every dollar goes right back to your community and helps support local agriculture. Information booths, arts and crafts, and street musicians all add to the amazing atmosphere. It’s like a full-blown fair held every week right on the Capitol Square! So whether your fridge is running low on veggies or you just want chat with some of your neighbors, be sure to stop by Saturdays from 6 to 2.

For those of you that would like to get more involved in the farmer’s market, I have great news! There are volunteer positions at the information booth, as well as many others through Friends of the Dane County Farmers’ Market. For more information please follow the link: http://www.dcfm.org/support.asp.

BuySellMadison.com may be making some additional appearances at the Farmers’ Market in the near future, spreading the word about the Madison’s social marketplace and helping out anyone that wants to get signed up. We’ll be sure to announce any details. As always, don’t be afraid to say hi! We’d love to hear from you!

Successful Garage Sale Tips

  • Consider a fun theme!  Ideas include “Off To College”, “Garage Findings”, “Old Christmas Decorations”, etc.
  • Advertise your garage sale one week prior to peak interest within the community.

May we suggest a free ad on BuySellMadison.com?

  • Make a colorful sign to place outside of your house notifying people of your sale.
  • Overprice some of your items in anticipation of bargaining.
  • Place larger sized price tags on large items.
  • Have an extension cord on hand so people can test your electronics before they buy them.
  • Have bags and boxes ready for buyers to carry goods to their cars.
  • Group garage sales are very effective because they allow people to come and see more sales all in one place!
  • Background music can provide a neat, buyer friendly atmosphere.  Nothing like a little Dave Matthews to put your community in a buying mood!
  • Don’t underestimate word of mouth advertising.  Tell as many people as you can to spread the word!
  • If the weather is hot, consider selling sodas or lemonade to your customers.

Unofficial Statistic: a hydrated neighbor is 30% more likely to purchase things than a dehydrated one.

  • Make sure you have lots of change on hand.  Running out of quarters can be a disaster!
  • Display some of your more desirable items closer to the street as a way to draw people in.
  • Check with your neighborhood association to make sure that you have the correct permit, if needed.
  • Remember to count your money afterwards to see how much extra cash you’ve made!
